The ZIP code is the system of postal codes used by the United States Postal Service (USPS). The name ZIP, an acronym for Zone Improvement Plan[1] that is properly written in capital letters, was chosen to suggest that the mail travels more efficiently, and therefore more quickly, when senders use it. The basic format consists of five numerical digits. An extended ZIP + 4 code includes the five digits of the ZIP code, a hyphen and then four more digits, which allow a piece of mail to be directed to a more precise location than by the ZIP code alone. ZIP Code was originally registered as a trademark by the U.S. Postal Service but its registration has since expired.

A Zone Improvement Plan (ZIP) Code is the numerical code assigned by the US Postal Service to designate a local area or entity for the delivery of mail. ZIP Codes may consist of 5, 7, 9, or 11 digits, and may refer to a street section, a collection of streets, an establishment, a structure, or a group of post office boxes.

ZIP codes are postal codes used in the United States. They are pretty much the same as postal codes in any other country, though unlike some countries' postal codes, ZIP codes never contain any letters. ZIP stands for "Zone Improvement Plan".

zip code is equivalent to pincode in our country or postcodes anywhere else and as you might be knowing that in order to simplyfy workload areas are signified by postal codes so that it can help in delivering mail ...they are not state specific that is it is not necessary as if all the codes in a region will be rhyming or bear any resemblance...they may or may not.......look in whitepages.com..it is actually for finding names and phone numbers in the usa but i am sure that you will find a link there to find the desired zipcode.............
