Don't worry. Hearing voices and having strange sensations prior to falling asleep is perfectly normal. These are called hypnagogic hallucinations, and are regarded as normal sleep phenomena. About 40% of people get them.
Even if you hear voices (loud, distinct, clear ones, when you are wide awake), this does not mean you are mentally ill. Research has shown that only one third of people who hear voices have any diagnosable psychiatric disorder. The other two thirds are healthy. These numbers even exclude people who experience hypnagogic hallucinations.
Read up about schizophrenia. You will see that many of the answers given here are not accurate. Schizophrenia has many symptoms including disordered thought and social withdrawal, it is not just 'hearing voices'.
Aside from that, psychosis (which includes hearing voices) can be caused by a range of psychiatric disorders, not just schizophrenia. It is a severe symptom, and you would probably know that something is wrong in your life already.

I was kind of experiencing the same thing, as in hearing noises around the home and rustlings on the carpet, but I realised that it was the circulation in my ear and the air noises in my ear from being pressed on my pillow. But that might not be the case for you. You might have a gift, or it could be some sort of schizophrenic episode, but that wouldn't explain why it happens when you sleep, if that were the case it would happen throughout the day aswell. Try sleeping on your back and see how it goes. If you're also afraid of the dark, it could also be your mind confirming your fears and playing tricks on you.
Good Luck.

No, you're not going crazy. All you are actually hearing is the movement of fluids within the inner part of the ear and sinuses. You may be getting the beginnings of tinnitus, a constant noise in the ears. Go see a doctor about it.

LOL thats been happining to me for eons(not all the time.. but enough).. but mine are more like radio in the background.. music, talk shows, sometime even weather blurbs.. faint but I can make out some of it... and i dont even have a radio in the house...
All I can say is i just got used to it... (hell sometimes the music is even good if its not Country)
I'm sure theres some shrink pill out there that will take care of it.. but i really dont like shrinks or thier pills...
There are several psych disorders that could cause that Schizophernia (which runs in my family) and demetia to name a few.. yer best bet is to see a doc.. or get used to it..

it is not normal to hear voices when no one else is around. if you keep on hearing these voices and you are certain no one is around then you may be having auditory hallucinations. but his doesn't make you crazy. there are several things that may be causing these hallucinations. just be honest and open with your doc. he'll inquire about the stressed you're going through, how you are coping, drugs you are taking, etc.. he will help you through it, just cooperate and give all the information needed.

You could have some sort of an ailment like the early onset of pschizophrenia. OR.....like has happened to me before, I am intensely paying attention to the noises around me such as the heating system and it seems like voices. It can actually be extremely convincing.

I hear voices when I deprive myself of sleep. I believe it is my brain beginning to dream although my eyes are still open.
