My daughter went back to school today. She has been given hard homework to do already.I believe in homework but they should ease their way back into it .Usually the homwork is covering books and preparing their books.

Its not that I disagree with homework.Other years its usually been covering books-all my daughters teachers have done this as part of homework. They usually let the kids settle in to their new class.I know that in senior years its important to do homework as she in year 7. My daughter was very stresssed about going to school in the first place and on top of that my daughter has puberty issues to deal with. This was not even revision homework.Yes sure give some homework but not on the first day back when its all stressful for the first day getting used to a new teacher and a class.Far better homework is to talk to your parents about the day and what the teacher expects for the year.At least that way you can spend some family time together. For the record my daughter is very studious and takes her work seriously.Sure I know that its good for kids to think but they spend all day at school learning. She started her homework when she came home from school but as it was required some thought .

She had homework first night and none since. Its not because she had not finished it at school. All the kids had the same work to do.What was the point of homework first night and none given out since then?It does not make sense.

you have no clue what hard home work is. I am 17, and I started college 2 years early. I am up till 2-3 am EVERY NIGHT. and I have to be up at 6 every day. I have done this from the first day of school and it will probably continue till the last day. just do it and don't complain.

I don't particularly agree with a lot of homework anyway. First off, if the kid needs help they are likely to give up without a teacher there, then get in trouble the next day for not having their homework complete. They are much more likely to do well on their work, if not actually learn, if the teacher is there and willing to walk them through the parts they have trouble with. Secondly, there may be circumstances away from class that prevent the child from getting a lot of work done outside of school. Also, the kid is at school for 8 hours. That should be enough time to complete their work.
Now I think a little homework, like reading the pages that they will be learning the following day, and possibly answering a few questions on it, is OK. That helps to prepare them for the next day's topic without straining them too bad. But regardless of what day of school it is, there is no point in loading students down with tons of homework, not knowing what they are going home to. All it does is create stress at home that can work its way into the classroom later on.

The homework that is given out on the first day of school, generally, is used as a review of things that were covered last year and the student should know. It's supposed to be a refresher or review for the students, so that they can get back in the groove and be prepared to learn knew things in connection to what they have already learned. For example, if a student learned addition and subtraction the previous year, then they will review that inorder to begin learning multiplication and division.

This is a pet peeve of mine. I think that teachers and or school district needs to stop overwhelming children in elementary school especially with homework. My daughter gets stressed out staying home when she is sick because she will be bombarded when she goes back with what she missed in class and homework. This is way too young for kids to be getting stressed out about this. Also, my kids have homework every weekend which really annoys me that we have to take time out of family time or trips to get this done. I think may be the reason so many people are jumping on the home school band wagon.Give kids a break they are only kids once!!!

Your daughter's teacher is most likely wanting to start the year off with the sort of routine you should expect for the rest of the year. The teacher might also want to see where her students are now to get a baseline for where she should start lessons. Give your daughter (and yourself and the teacher) some time to settle in. If you see this becomes a problem, conference with your daughter's teacher.

It all depends on what grade she's in. If she's in kindergarten... well, no. Kindergarteners don't get homework that much. If she's in 6th grade or higher like me, yeah, she'd get homework the first day she comes back. But it's just covering books and preparing their books to be put to use for later, I'm sure it's not that bad.

covering and prepping books isn't homework. that's funny, though :) maybe easing into it would be nice instead of getting a ton the first day back, but it's better than not getting any at all. homework is important even if it is a pain. comfort yourself with the fact that your child is probably getting a good education!

its not really fair, but thats school. thats why they go to get work, do work and learn from that. i understand sometimes my kids get entirely too much homework, to the point its an all night event. but as long as it isnt often i dont mind that. they are only helping the children.

Is it fair that American children are given every advantage known to man but as a country our children are stupid compared to most other countries? We send children to school to learn, not to read magazines and dress like Linsay Lohan. Figure out your priorities, smart daughter or daughter taught to make excuses why she shouldn't have to do something like homework when she gets home from school regardless of what day it is. IT'S SCHOOL!

It isn't fair but they give it so that the kids realise they have homework from day 1, and it is ongoing.
They are trying to teach them to be responsible.
Even if they are only 5.
