Best advise is to first read through the recipe, make sure you have the ingredients and they are fresh, not expired. Make the recipe, then try it. If you feel that something is off or you want more of a certain flavor, start tweaking the recipe. Baking is a fine art of certain things working together to create a desired end result. Don't fool around with things like the amoung of leavening required for the item. Once you get the basics of baking, you can make your own changes and create amazing things! And, don't forget to add the salt if the recipe calls for it. Most think that salt is more for savory dishes, but it definately adds flavor to the sweets as well!

DO:

Always make your measurements EXACT.

Pay attention to you recipe for details such as : use UNSALTED butter, use ROOM TEMPERATURE butter or eggs that are in ROOM TEMPERATURE (if you miss out on these details, your baked goods could go very wrong)

Buy the best ingredients.

Don't:

Overdo the mixing. Depending on what your making, if you overdo the mixing, it could make cookies have the texture of bread. Over mixing could also make your dough harden.

Hope this helps :)

Do learn how to use substitutes, like dried cranberries for raisins, or honey for sugar

Don't forget your modifications if a recipe turns out really great that you made differently then before

Don't bake a frozen pizza when you are sleepy. You might wake up to smoke an hour later and pizza is hard to chew and not very tasty when it is burnt.
