Methyldopa (or Aldomet) is used for high blood pressure, and can be used in pregnancy. It DOES cross the placenta and can be found in cord blood and breast milk, but the possibility of harm to the baby is remote.

hello i am 31 weeks pregnant and i have been on blood pressure tablets from the begining. also 2 weeks ago found out i have gestational diabeties and been put on a strict diet. (ohh the joys of pregnancy, NOT) the blood pressure tablets im on are: Labetalol 100mg 3 times a day. if your blood pressure is under control it will not harm the baby. i have heard from people that i may have to have a c-section because i might have a big baby (because of the diabetes, the diabeties goes away after i have the baby) but i think they will try to deliver the baby natrally and if you or the baby get stressed in any way they may resort to giving you a c-section. im sorry i cant help you with the rest of your questions because i have not gotten that far. good luck and all the best to you and your new family.

Not typically.... but the typical medications used to treat high blood pressure can't be safely used during pregnancy. So pregnant women with high blood pressure are given Methyldopa.

Methyldopa is used to treat high blood pressure. It works by relaxing the blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily through the body.
This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses.
