Okay, I know I'm going to probably feel really stupid once someone gives me the answer to this question, but....I was just thinking about this phrase - 'cause I was just about to use it...when it occurred to me -

If "hopeless" means "without hope"...and to basically not expect something to have an ideal or positive outcome.....then, how could a "hopeless romantic" be someone who is keeping his/her fingers crossed for the possibility of one day falling in love or who is just in love with the idea of being in love or being romantic or romanced????

Wouldn't the appropriate phrase be "'hopeful' romantic"???

Someone let me know, now, if I'm wrong....

itry007:

In response to what you said....with the definition you gave for "hopeless romantic," wouldn't the better phrase, then, be "'shameless' romantic"?

Hopeless doesn't mean "will stop at anything," as far as I know, ya know? It means you don't have hope for something, doesn't it?

And as for "hopeful romantic," I'm not sure I've ever heard anyone use it like that....

Since I (thankfully) don't seem to be the only one a lil' confused about this, lol...I'm thinking this might be one of those phrases people just habitually use, without ever really stopping to think about what they're saying or what it means....because it's been used (possibly incorrectly) for so long and so frequently....

But again - could be wrong! Just a perspective...

Okay, okay! Got it! tina790's response made perfect sense...

See, I...and apparently many others out there..were thinking of it along the lines of....how that person views romance - like, seeing romance hopelessly......which wouldn't make sense, because the whole point is that that person is actually exceptionally hopeFUL about love & whatnot!

But what tina790 is saying...and it makes much sense....is that it's not describing the person's view on love as hopeless, but the actual person, him/herself........Like, trying to get that person out of that "eternal love/romance" mindstate is hopeless....

It's still kind of confusing though, lol....And I actually think my initial interpretation makes more sense, but I do still get it...

Thanks for the breakdown, Tina...

It's "hopeless" as in "pathetic" and "is never gonna change." Adjective "hopeless" emphasizes the extent of that person being a romantic.

Hopeless might mean without hope but it's also cliched for totally useless, not worth a cracker etc. And when you're in love you really are hopeless, though the term hopeless romantic actually referes to those people who actually love being in love, moreso than being in love with any particular person. Nowadays however, it is termed or cliched as people who are real soppy, you know, those that'll watch a romantic movie in preference to anything else. See how values change over the years, trouble is, terminology doesn't. i.e. Once to have a gay time was to go out and be happy, now it means to go out and be queer!

Hopeful romantic and hopeless romantic are two different things. Hopeless means nothing will stop this person from being romantic...a romantic fool of sorts. Hopeful romantic is one who hopes for romance. Good question.
