By making it feel inviting and that can be done with very little money if you pick things out wisely. Think pillows on the couch, not stiff ones, but soft chenille type pillows and a nice soft throw draped over the side of an arm chair. Candles! Buy three pillar candles, in varying sizes and group them on the coffee table. Think lighting. Buying lamp shades in darker colors dims the light to make it more cozy. You can find a TON of accents at consignment shops, or even at TJ Maxx for minimal prices. Think coffee table books too, something that would spark and interest. And most of all, color. Colors that are calming and comforting.

Clean and crisp is the way to go.
Basic, neutral colours for the walls-magnolia is always a good colour(and don't be fooled into thinking you have to buy 'faded cotton' or something trendy which is just magnolia at £10 a tin more).
Don't try and do everything at once-if you're on a budget then do the painting, do it well and then when you've got some cash tackle the next bit.
Always buy as high up the quality ladder as you can-and don't think trendy think classic. Class and taste NEVER goes out of style. Ask yourself whether it'll last 5yrs or more before you buy any major item.
For top notch curtains (heavy, quality fabrics and fully lined) at bargain prices try charity shops or e-bay. Travel out of your area(if necessary) to somewhere affluent and check out the red cross or sally army shops-you will be amazed at what people donate.
Carpets are ALWAYS the way to go with flooring. Been there, got the t-shirt with laminate(and we got the veneered stuff) it's bug heaven-if you don't like spiders don't do laminate-and it scuffs and pound for pound it's expensive. Try ringing locally based trade warehouses, they are often happy to sell to you for cash-a sale is a sale-off the rolls they have in stock and you'll pay peanuts for much better quality-both carpet and underlay wise(and they'll know a man who can fitting wise too!). Failing that, find a fitter and ask them if they can arrange carpet and underlay-do it backwards and whatever you do avoid the big boys that advertise on TV.
Buy when you can afford to and don't rush it. Wait a week and get that better item rather than buy the one don't like as much now-most places will take a good deposit(even charity shops).
If you're going to shop out of the paper, take someone with you so that if you get there and don't like it you can walk away and not feel obliged,(and get a second opinion).
Most of all, don't forget that your friends are there to see you not your wallpaper and it takes time and effort to get things exactly the way you want them, loads of money or not!

A tin of white paint doesn't cost very much, and will give your room a light, airy feel. Also, make sure there is no mess in the room, place a couple of beautiful items in a prominent position as a talking point, get a couple of attractive throws to disguise and ugly sofa, and hey presto! Also, don't worry too much about what other people think - it's your home, and as long as you like it, the rest of the world's opinion doesn't matter.

Personalise it as much as you can. Decorate it with things that mean something to you and reflect who you are. When arranging and buying things like furniture keep in mind the practicality of each item. Also try to think of the function of the room - keep the walk ways clear , make good use of natural and artificial lighting. You can do this cheaply enough Op shops , garage sales etc. believe me the times my place felt very welcoming and compliments flooded was when I was on a shoestring budget. I found I appreciated more what I had then so naturally my friends did too.

decorating can be expensive, the experts state that wall paint makes the biggest impact on a room. Get a bold new colour, and paint you rooms,
1. faux painting will give it distinction
2. classic deep tones with white trim on the woodwork in eye .......catching
3. pastel shades and an air atmosphere is soothing
4. keep thing simple and neat, simplistic is the key to style
next get a print or painting to match your walls. groups of pictures are excellent
or
get a large mat and paint your own wall decoration, anyone can do an abstract, using the colours of your room, add some white to the colours to give you lighter shades, or mix colours to give the painting different colour that complement
after that pick a spot and save redo and slowly you will have remolded
check
sales
flea markets
to get finds that will work in your rooms

Laminate flooring is very cheap now and always looks great. You cant beat a good Mangolia paint, they are always on offer in B & Q, one big tin should do a living room. If you have a window then put up a voil rather than curtains, these are very cheap now. Keep it uncluttered and tidy with a few candles and personal pictures and it will look great.

trawl through the charity shops for old saris/wallpaper/curtains etc and drape your furniture and old tables, fresh flowers are nice and welcoming and you yourself being happy to see them will probably be enough
