I have a very sharp, piercing pain only on the right side of my throat. It is behind my tongue and tonsil, and down the side of my throat. I also have a slightly irritating pain in my right ear. It started earlier this evening with just a minor irritation in my throat, I just thought I was getting a cold, but I have no other symptoms. I can hardly swallow, and it even hurts to inhale. It is not a normal sore throat! And my right tonsil is swollen.
Can anyone give me information on what this might be and what I can do besides garggling salt water (done), taking advil (done), drinking hot water (done).
Thanks!

Check tomorrow and the next day for whites spots on the back of your throat. If so, it could be strep. If you see white spots, you'll have to go to the doc I'm afraid. An antibiotic would be necessary. And hurry. It'll only get worse, so the sooner you go and get started on meds, the less suffering.

In the meantime, gargle peroxide. It works wonders for other sore throat infections, and may even stave off strep if you get it early enough. Get lots of sleep today. Don't go to work/school.

maybe you have tonsillitis. I would however recommend a blood culture test to be done to identify the exact viral. Then you can proceed with an antibiotic for the same.
cheers

You are having Tonsilitis. Take Erythromycin 500mg twice daily. Apply antiseptic throat paint. Gargle with good mouthwash.

you will need to go to the doc and get some penicillin. or if you want to delay, try chrewing up several cloves of raw garlic in the course of the day and bear the burning as long as possible then when it stops burning you can drink coffee or what ever. i have total faith in garlic to kill bacteria and fungi.
