yup, my wife is Italian. So I took lessons for a while. The best way to learn is if you can visit or live in the country of your partner for a while.
I was quite surprised because I learned a whole new other beautiful side to my wife and I ended up loving her even more because I got to understand the sacrifices she had to make and the difficulties she had when trying to adapt to a new culture and language.
Our relationship is the better for it and I wish more people in the world could experience the same as it makes us more understanding of other cultures and brings us the realisation that we are all the same and have the same wants and needs.
Good luck and have fun.

Japanese (even how they write!) because of my partner in the Philippines - Japan Student exchange. I saw the effort on how he learned Filipino to write to me and so I bought a CD on how to read and write Japanese... Were still best of friends though different cultures. Get your CD too! Arigato Gozaimasu, Sayonara!

i already knew a little french, but when i started dating a french major who traveled in france a bit, studied the literature, the language, the culture, the whole bit... i brushed up on my skills quite a lot. i thought speaking french with him was pretty sexy, besides, we could have better conversations about what he was interested in if i knew more about where he was coming from. we aren't dating any more, but reading essays from art historians and philosophers in french is still one of my hobbies. right now i'm digging into some great Georges Batailles!

My ex wife tried to learn Portuguese to impress me but didn't pursue it. I thought i was really sexy to hear a few words she was trying to say. Even if you don't speak all the way, by just showing that you are working hard to learn something for him will sure make the whole difference. Not to mention that he is gonna love your accent.

Yes, I did. No, it didn't work. But I'm not getting the relevance or correlation of learning his language and the relationship working out.

Not me, but my girlfriend is learning German for her new bf. I laughed when we got into her car and the radio came on to a German Language tape. I think it's a good thing. Learning something new is always good.
