no, that is not true. a high protein diet will not cause a "healthy" kidney to fail.

YES..burning protein as fuel gives off harmful by products that will damage the kidneys. The reason Atkins works is because it is not healthy. The body burns carbohydrates as fuel. It is most efficient and the only source of glucose, what muscles and your brain use as food. When you eliminate carbohydrates, the body burns fat first, then and only then does it burn protein, because protein is used to rebuild, not fuel. A prolonged Atkins regimen will harm you. Yes, you will lose weight...but anorexia is effective too....think about it.
