She is now completely naked on her belly, the insides of her hind legs and one of her toes.
There have been no changes in her diet or living arrangements and she appears to be very content and relaxed. I also own another cat who does not have this problem so it doesn't appear to be anything environmental like fleas or anything.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions.

On a side note, when I was a teen I had a different cat who, after we had her fixed also began chewing her fur off and gaining a significant amount of weight. She eventually broke herself of the chewing habit and her fur eventually grew back.

I would take her to a veterinarian, first, and have her examined for parasites.

If no parasites are found, I would consider that she may have developed an allergy to an ingredient in her food or her litter. (Pets can develop allergies to food ingredients after successfully eating them for a long time). Frequent chewing or itching of fur is one symptom of allergy. So under your vet's advice, I would consider changing up her food and litter for a period of 4 to 6 weeks and see if there is any change.

After ruling all that out, I would suggest that your cat simply has some kind of neuosis or anxiety that is making her chew at her own fur. Your vet or an animal behaviorist would have to help your resolve this, but for starters I'd look to make sure your cat gets plenty of attention from you and has toys and catnip and climbing structures to keep her busy and entertained, because sometimes these nuerotic behaviors develop simply out of boredom and pent-up energy.

Through the years I've had a few cats that did that. If the skin isn't broken or irritated, it's probably not a big problem. If so, take the cat to the vet to check for skin conditions or parasites. My cats all stopped after awhile with no permanent effects. I think their bellies got cold after awhile. The cause could be boredom or stress, so you could try playing with her a little more and giving her more attention and see if it stops. Good Luck.
