When you're crying you're using a lot of breath, so it kinda has the same effect as strenous excercise, shortage of oxygen in your lungs causes you to take dep breaths, and since you've been crying the breath comes out shaky. That's why if you cry too much you may black out...

When you cry you don't breath normal, so when your done you need a deep breath to get More oxygen

yeah i know, its awful isn't it? i htink its got something to do with adreneline and your breathing pattern being disrupted. I used to cry like that when i was a child (and sometimes even now!)
