finishing a bathroom down in my basement. wanting to texture the ceiling. to cheap to buy the texture sprayer. mainly since it is just the one room. any ideas on how to still get the knock down look? with out using the sprayer

u can buy textured ceiling paint at your local hardware store by the gallon. i believe u need a special roller, for this job. i did it years ago in a house and with the right roller it turned out fine.

you can buy a stippling brush @ your local hardware, about 7 bucks. mix some topping compound until it has consistency of runny pudding. lay a bedcoat (appx 1/4") of thinned mud around perimeter of ceiling, then use a 9" roller to apply thinned mud to remainder of ceiling- try to keep your coat as even as possible. when it looks good, pull your roller from edge to edge starting at one side, so it all is "pulled" the same direction. put your stipple brush on the end of your paint pole and stomp away. may take a couple tries with the stomp brush, you can always re-roll and stomp again. let it dry for 45 min.- 1 hr., then use a large straightedge (I use a 24" squeegee) and pull lightly from edge to edge to create your knockdown finish. they sell an aerisol can of the stuff at home depot. it isnt super cheap, but is much easier and cheaper than the spackle guns they normally use.
