In my 40 years of working as an engineer, it's been my experience that they tend to do as little as possible (except play politics) In particular, the good ones just stay the hell out of the way. But most of them try to 'play at' being an engineer and they screw things up badly ☺

Mostly boring crap like working out budgets, schedules, and personnel issues.
