I'll add my suggestion - I have straightened my hair in different ways in the past 8 years or so; curling irons and flat irons both. I bought the $40 or so ones at Sally Beauty Supply, and owned two different ones within a 2-3 year time span.
I bought Paul Mitchell's The Smoothing Iron in October, and it is hands-down the best appliance I have ever bought. With the other irons I bought, the gold on the plates would wear off eventually. I haven't noticed anything of the sort with this iron (I've been told that the others were only ceramic coated, not actually ceramic plates). The Paul Mitchell is impossible to miss - it has bright, lime green plates. I'm African-American and my hair can get very big and fluffy when I wear it naturally, and my hair is completely straight with this iron. It also makes my hair feel much healthier (though it may be the better quality iron combined with Peratin, the product I use on my hair). One thing I noticed is that, with the old irons, my hair might snag on the plates or iron a bit; with this iron, I can run it the full length of my hair with no problem. I've also noticed there's no lift with this iron - I start close to the scalp and it gets straight from the root to the ends.
This iron cost $135 at Trade Secret, but I am from Oregon and we don't pay sales tax, so it will be a bit more elsewhere. They also have a 'style club' you can join, which costs $9, and saved me a few bucks on the cost of the iron. It was much more than I wanted to pay for the iron, and it was difficult for me to buy it, but now I have no regrets about it whatsoever!

I use the Paul Mitchell Flat Iron and it is amazing. Quick and easy to use, plus it works so well in all weather situations. It costs about $130 but is so worth it. I have very thick, frizzy hair too.
I used to have a Vidal Sassoon which is a $30 iron and works okay, but takes a while to actually get the hair straight and doesn't stay straight if it's humid or windy. I've used the Chi flat iron several times before and it just wasn't as good as the Paul Mitchell one. My friend uses the Sedu and her hair doesn't stay very straight either.
When I got my hair highlighted (at Visible Changes) the stylist used the Paul Mitchell and I loved it. Since my hair gets dried out if I wash it everyday I was surpised to have my hair still perfectly straight 1.5 days later! It also left my hair feeling silky smooth (great for having just put chemicals in my hair for highlights)- I honestly kept feeling my hair because it was incredibly soft. It even lasted through the humidity and wind. I knew I had to buy the Paul Mitchell after that.

The best one i have seen in the market today is the HAI convertible ceramic iron. it runs around $120. This is a professional iron so you now it will last you a long time. It has ceramic plates, so this will heat up evenly, to protect your hair. the plates on this iron are 1inch in diameter, so you can bump the ends in or out for a different style. in order keep your hair healthy make sure you use a good shampoo and conditioner.Paul Mitchael has a great hair straightening line called 'SUPER SKINNY' They will protect your hair from the heat and help with cut the drying time by 50%, when using the whole line! well hope that helps;)

They have these new flat irons out and I can't think of the name of them. You can go to a beauty supply store and buy them. The best part about them is they won't break your hair off even if you use them everyday.I think they're called acrlic irons. They are a little thinner than the flat irons but they work so good. You can curl your hair flatten your hair or bend your hair at the edges with them.

Hands down, the CHI brand straigh irons are THE best! And instead of going to a store, try eBay! You can get them brand-new with a guarantee for very little (well, relatively speaking!)
Good luck!

The best one for me is conair. WAY under $400. About $25. The only one I've tried that gets hot enough. My hair will get super straight. Also, redken smooth down shampoo and heat glide.
