This will be debated until the end of time. And the fact that you pinpointed these phrases as opposed to peaceful ones shows the propaganda these days. After 9/11, Islam has been studied and eace phrase has been put out in the open for the public to comment on. I do not advocate what happened on that day, but people have gotten a very warped idea of Muslims. And I guess, I cannot do anything about that. I know what it feels like. I wear the Muslim head scarf and people do look at me a little differently. Islam is definitely a religion of peace, just as other religions are. I think you can find similar "violent" phrases in scriptures of other religions. The media is very one sided on this issue. However, I think you should not be aksing this question on something so open like yahoo! answers. If you want a correct answer with examples I suggest you go to a Muslim Mosque and talk to someone there. This is a common question among non-Muslims and perhaps if you seek the advice of a Muslim expert, you will get the correct knowledge, and you can pass this on to others who do not understand Islam.

Not at all!

Islam is wholly understood, and that is exactly why it is criticised and feared.

The Quran answers all of its critics and Islam is the Quran.

Even Muslims are afraid of the Quran and go in search of writings that claim to be the sayings of the prophet in order that they might avoid the good deeds and the great responsibility that the Quran commands.

Islam is about the purification of human life here on Earth and most people want to be saved by some mystic or mysterious personality without having to make the effort to earn salvation by their own deeds.

The Human being is an animal that is endowed with that extra sense of reason that comes with the freedom to choose and this is why the choice is the easiest since we are also endowed with greed and envy and self-preservation and self-gratification, which shuns responsibility and effort and hard work.

Islam is clearly understood and therefore avoided and the Quran makes this quite clear.

Even those who claim to make peace are shown up in the Quran as those who make mischief on Earth and will not admit it, but the Quran also states that Allah will not be frustrated and that we all came from Allah and to Allah we will all return, bare and alone, each and everyone of us.

Yes, Islam is very misunderstood. Politicials and the media use it as a scapegoat for nearly every bad thing that happens in this world. People need to see through the media bias and the propaganda. The majority of Muslims are peaceful, wonderful people.

Islam is the religion of Peace. But misunderstood by all world. Because of media. The media owners are the members of The Secret World Government members whom they want poeple fight each other.

So Islam (Holy Quran and Teachings of Prophet Muhammed (pbuh;) says that to respect and love all mankind, except cruels.

"If a person kills an innocent person, in Islam that means to kill all mankind. If a person saves a person, in Islam that meants to save all mankind."

so if you have a time please read Holy Quran and the Life of Prophet Muhammed (pbuh)

you will find the answer. What Islam is?

That depends on which parts you want to look at. Take the time when it was starting to spread in the Eastern and Southern Mediterranean, This was a time when Christianity had pretty much taken up position throuhgout the Mediterranean, even in countries like Egypt, most of the people were Christian. When the Muslims started to spread their faith, they ended up conquering one people after another and either forcing the people to convert or die.
As for today, there are some Muslims that believe and actually abide by the Koran, but then there are the terrorists whom do not abide by the Koran.
My opinion? It started as a violent religion, and it almost seems to be ending as one as well.

Is Islam a peaceful religion? That's like asking if Christianity is a peaceful religion. In principle Christianity is about peace and love and justice. In the real world Christians have committed as much atrocity as anybody. The same can be said of Muslims.

Islam and Christianity are not all that different. They're both related to Abraham. They have a lot of beliefs in common. Both religions consider itself the one true religion. Both have extraordinarily bloody histories.

There are so many varieties of Islam, and the Koran seems to be so ambiguous on many points, that I think it is really hard to determine what is the "true" Islam. Nevertheless, I would like to someday gain a better understanding of the Koran and Islam, if I ever have time. I suspect that here are many people intentionally misrepresenting Islam; some make it appear less oppressive and cruel than it really is, and some make it appear more oppressive and cruel than it really is.

as a muslim i would have to say you are right. example the word jihad. people hear this word and say we are terrorists. what people do not know is the highest form of jihad is to fight yourself. this means to obey god. fast, pray, pay our zackat (charity) just get through your life doing what the quran asks you to do. it is considered a personal jihad. another form of it can be a mother raising her children to be good people. they are helping the cause of islam by producing productive and respectable members of society. which in the future could revert others to islam by leading in a richous manner. many people are stuck on the terrorists syndrome. people do not even know that a haddith states the ink of a scholar is greater then the blood of a martyer. this says a lot for our religion. why is this? the truth must be told. peace does not always have to constitute fighting.

Both. Islam is a religion of peace, but here's the catch, only when everyone is a Muslim. Islam first spread by the sword and now it spreads by the bomb.
