No, you're not Single for tax purposes.
Your options are Married Filing Jointly or Married Filing Separately. There is ONE exception to that.
If one of you has custody of any minor dependent childen AND you lived apart for the ENTIRE last 6 months of the year, that person may be eligible to file as Head of Household. The other MUST file Married Filing Separately in that case.
In no case can either of you file as Single, however, unless you are legally separated under a decree of separate maintenance.

You are not single. You have a choice of Married Filing Jointly or, Married Filing Separately. If there are kids involved, then whom ever has custody of the kids may be able to file as Head of Household.

No, if you are still legally married, then you can't file as single. Some states have something called a "decree of separate maintenance" - if you have that, then maybe you can. Check with your attorney.

you could file joint, or married filing separate. many couples reside in different areas for work or other reasons, but choose to file jointly. you just have to decide which household the paperwork is going to lol.
