I went to a school this summer that was in an office building where the Marine recruiting station was by the elevator door. I got to talking to the recruiting officers, and observing their office, and even reading their pamphlets while I sat and ate my sandwich. I found out some amazing things, and one of them was what truly professional Marines we have now that there is no draft. I also saw the same sense of professionalism and pride at the other recruiting offices, which were in the same building. An all-volunteer military has been one of our better ideas. I prayed for that since the 1960s, and I'm so proud to see it worked.

Did you know you don't have to be contemplating joining up yourself, or even be eligible to join, just to go in and ask questions and pick up pamphlets?

And yes, I think we have the best military service in the world, with the possible exception of the Swiss.

Yes, I have, with my husband when he joined the Air Force. Our experience was much like yours. And I want to say what a lovely post yours was to read.

11 years later, I am glad we spoke to that recruiter. He was never lied to or misled in anyway, and always treated professionally. The recruiter also answered my questions as a wife very frankly and honestly, which I truly apprectiate, as well as gave me the resources to become familiar with military life and benefits.

He is now having a very successful Air Force career and I am proud of him.

The military during Vietnam was for the most part volunteers and the Marines were almost entirely volunteers.

The so-called hippie generation stepped up to fight in a real war with large numbers killed in action.
