other than NYC? My husband is a big history buff and I would like to plan a weekend getaway for our 20th anniversary. We live in NY State - Westchester County, and grew up in NYC. So, we pretty much know the city. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There is a ferry on Lake Champlain that takes cars across to Vermont.

You didn't say when your anniversary is. The area is absolutely gorgeous, but, Fort Ticonderoga is closed for the winter.

Orange County is LOADED with history! USMA at West Point is there, there's the Purple Heat Museum at the New Windsor Cantonment, there's Knox's Headquarters, Washington's Headquarters. It's a big Civil War historic area.

Not to mention - it's only about an hour's drive from Westchester and VERY feasible for a day or a weekend.

FDR is buried in the rose garden of his home in Hyde Park NY .
The Culinary Institute of America is in the same area and would make a great place for lunch or dinner.
Cooperstown is another romantic kind of place and this time of year. The town itself belongs to another time and place .
I was originally going to send you to Fort Ticonderoga but discovered that it is not open in winter

Fort Ticonderoga and the Saratoga Battlefield are pretty close to each other. You can trace the route of Burgoyne from Ticonderoga to the Saratoga site -- Saratoga battlefield is pretty amazing.
