Hmmm... a lot of this depends on personal taste.

Some of the top shelf vodkas would be Gray Goose or Belvedere those would have less of an 'alcohol' taste and be more expensive. The other liqueur is coffee flavored - the standard is Kahlua but Tia Maria is better tasting. Milk (whole) is good although half and half will give you a creamier, smooth taste.

Why ruin a good vodka with kahluah?
Try Tangeray Sterling Vodka on the rocks.
But seriously. I've personally witnessed people order a shot of generic booze as a shot and then demand a call liqour in their mixed drink (ie gray goose and kahlua). If you yahoos honestly think you can taste the difference, I'm going to retire from 30 years of bartending. Now, getting a hangover from a really cheap vodka is another story.

An aside I've noticed is that top shelf vodkas seem to be fairly interchangeable ( I mean in mixed drinks). i.e. before all the fun names, there was essentially absolute and stoli and most people who drank one would drink the other; but smirnoff drinkers were different -- its always been smirnoff or nothing. I don't know why.

People that do that with Gray Goose are wanna bees; same with Sam Adams Beer.

Sorry, that's my oppinion.

and cream (rather than milk) is generally the route to go, but to each his own.

I like absolut. If you are trying to go cheap, you can use kamora instead of Kahlua. White Russians are my favorite, and I drink them a lot. The only thing is that if you use half and half or cream, they really fill you up, and they are soooo full of calories. I always use milk at home. They are thinner and go down easier. I'm a bartender, and the recipe we use is 1.25 oz. of your choice vodka, .75 oz. of Kahlua or the like... fill it up with milk or cream. If you like your drinks really sweet, you can use a vanilla flavored vodka, but it is almost overkill.

Yeah I use the knock off brands too. Use Half and half and then top it off with some Frangelico.
