First thing is to decide on a budget and make a potential guest list to get a ballpark number. When you have those squared away, decide on date options. You will need that info for your big ticket vendors. Your venue is the first vendor that should be squared away. Many venues require that you book them 2 yrs ahead, especially if they are a hotspot in your area. Photographer and caterer should be booked next as they will book up very quickly. Work your way down the line.
The local chat boards at theknot.com are a great resource for finding vendors and learning who to stay away from.

I know just the thing..one you don't want to burden parents with allot of cost in todays world, so get magazines and look at different things for ideas Micheals craft store is a great place where people will help you tons of wedding stuff.
As for a dress let me tell ya something you hope to only wear it once why not find out your size go to www.freecycle.org and find your area post what your looking for, someone has one out there somewhere or even thrift stores I have seen beautiful ones I know it is special but you would be suprised what you can find and the beauty you can have in it. Just an idea, you don't want to be in debt forever also there is a great website with rings called diamond nexus labs which make beautiful diamonds for so little that even you would not believe it check it out it is amazingly beautiful

1) research online about.com
2) just throw out ideas and write them down
3) consider the ideas that are of most interest to you and your sig other.
4) solidify plans
5) set goals / dates / responsibilities between you and your sig other, friends, etc.
6) accountability - yes, I know, this may sound like I'm looking at this process as a 'business', but I am...you need to have each person assigned with specific tasks. It would be YOUR responsibility to follow up and double check their progress.
7) get a calendar (outlook) to help organize - it gives you a good visual, contacts, to-do's, etc.
Best of luck!

First set the date, and where you want it so you can book it. Go Barnes and Nobles and buy a wedding planner book. They usually tell you what to do month by month. Or hire a wedding planner. Also check these websites.
