I have made fire with a bowdrill and with flint and steel. The flint and steel method was pretty easy once I figured out how to consistently strike the flint to obtain sparks.

The bowdrill took a little longer to get; there are many variables that you have to take into consideration such as using the right amount of pressure, getting a steady rhythm, having the fireboard set up properly, etc. Once I learned how though, I did it a second time much faster.

I think the bowdrill was more satisfying than the flint and steel; probably because it took more time and effort.

We did it often in the camps.

We get a small tool having cup like hole and another in the shape of a pen. By contineous friction of revolutions the rags that we keep surrounding it gets fired of heat. On fanning it with a paper board will catch fire from smoke.

Flint is great. Remember to make a tinder bundle. SCRAPE SOME FLINT FILINGS onto the bundle (this will help to ignite even faster and easier) then strike the flint with the dull side of a knife... voila!

You take some flint and you strike it with a pocketknife. I have done before. You say with out matches, I know another use a lighter.
