Would they still be expected to wear a white/ivory dress?

It only became traditional after Queen Victoria wore a white dress, before then brides wore their best dress regardless of colour. There are no set rules, and if you don't want to wear white then don't!

Maybe by the older generations attending, but a lot of brides now have colored dresses, or the top will just be a different color. Plus, in many other cultures, white is not the wedding dress color of tradition. Still, I wouldn't wear black or something that dark, because you do want it to fit in a bit, as well as being unique and beautiful on you.

Many designers seem to stick with pinks, reds, and burgundies when they do go with a colored wedding dress. I don't know if there is a reason, or if it has just been the trend the last few years.

My question: How do you know they aren't flattering on you??
A dress is way different than a shirt or pants!!
A friend of a friend of mine said the same thing, and then, she went and tried on three different colored dresses: one white, one ivory, and one egg-shell. (She went with the ivory, because it didn't bleach her out like the other two did). I would try on three different colors of dresses and have someone take a photo of you in them. Then, if you still don't like what you see, there are always white & ivory dresses with hints of colors (i.e. black, green, red, etc.) on them already.
That's all I got, hun!
Hope you find what you like... :-]

Wear anything you want! It is your body. If you are talking about for a wedding, like I said, wear what you want. There are a lot of choices out there. White is not a flattering color on me, so I wore a white dress with a dark red sash that accentuated my waist and made it look smaller. Also, the red sash drew attention AWAY from my huge hips!

Even the conservative designers are putting out plenty of dresses in "champagne" or with colored sashes, so no, you don't have to wear white.

Just find a really glorious gown in any color that meshes with the rest of your planning/theme/decor.

Personally I think white wedding gowns are boring.

"Expected"? Yes. But do you have to do what you're expected to? Of course not! Many wedding dress designers make gowns in blues, pinks, purples, etc. Don't be afraid to go with color, even a bold color like red or navy, if it's what you like.

Plenty of people wear wedding dresses that aren't white. People might be expecting a white dress, but you certainly don't have to wear one.

It's your day, your choice for a dress and your choice for the dress color! Wear what you want! If you like bright red, then wear bright red. It's up to you to choose!

It's your wedding. Wear whatever makes you happy. There's no rule that you have to wear light or white. Congrats and good luck!
