I really hate to answer questions with just websites for people to check. I like to supply information and then include the website that I found the information. But there is so much about this subject and I do not know what state you live in or what your exact circumstances are. So here are some websites for you to check out.

http://www.dca.ca.gov/pubs/car_buyer_rights.htm
http://www.carfax.com/
http://autorepair.ca.gov/StdPage.asp?Body=/geninfo/publications/Used_Car_Guide-Jan_1996.htm

I did find the following information about accident disclosures at this site:
http://www.california-lemonlawyer.com/PracticeAreas/Types-of-Automobile-Fraud.asp

Prior Accidents
You have a right to disclosure of prior material damage to a vehicle. For example, you must be told if a vehicle has been in a major accident, even if the damage has been "repaired." If you ask about prior accidents, you have a right to a truthful response.

I hope this helps. If you do not live in California, try searching for your state government page and you will probably find out what the disclosure laws are for your state,

Update:

Check out these sites for Illinois:
http://www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov/pressroom/2006_02/20060226.html
http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2006/02/il_used_car_data.html
From what I read it looks like you should have purchased your car in California.

Depends on the state. Here in Indiana, if the damage was less than ten percent of the value of the vehicle, they don't have to tell you. I took my father in laws Caddie to have some minor repair work done and the autobody place told me it was involved in a crash. He didn't even know. Personally, I think that is very wrong. Why the thumbs down? I didn't do anything or say anything wrong? I don't think people understand what the thumbs up/down mean. Jeezzz

No they don't have to tell you that the car has been hit, some dealer will come right out and tell you, other you will have to ask and in most cases they will tell you yes the car has been hit, and on the other hand they will tell you nothing. and lie and say OH NO ! it has not been hit. that's why they have the sign saying buy as is.

I am reasonably certain that all dealers must show on the window sticker and on the paperwork that the vehicle WAS damaged in an accident.

Call the DMV and verify that.

it depends.. if the car is crashed there must be some injury to the car. by seeing itself it must be clear that car must be crashed.
