Have you ever heard of the back beat? In a band the drummer carries the beat and feeds off the base player. If the drummer looses the beat the whole band looses the song and it sounds like they are playing out of tune. The drummer is positioned behind the band so the front players can feel the beat.

Peace

The drummer provides the rhythm and sets the tempo for the rest of the band. Thus the drummer needs to be behind everyone, so the other members of the band can hear him/her best.

Well, if he had any significant part in vocals, he'd be up front. I've seen this done before, but it's more like he's in the center of the stage. Drums also generate a lot more sound than other instruments, so logically, you'd place him in back. Think about in any song today though, most people don't focus on the drums more than the other parts.

I guess partially for acoustics, but in rock band performances it just makes the most sense aesthetically- the drums take up so much space and cover a significant portion of the stage, so if you're going to perform for a live audience, you'll want the performers who are able to move around, stand, and play to the audience to be up front- you know, your "frontmen" and what not. That way you can see everyone better and the whole show is much more dynamic.

Because he is visually less interesting to watch and that's IF you can see him/her back there behind all the gear. And, if you talk to any drummers you'll notice that they aren't the front runner type of people. They tend not to really want the spotlight for themselves and are much happier watching the action from their less visible seat behind the drums.

I mean, he keeps the beat. He's not trying to listen to the guitar to see when he's going to hit the next drum. His job is very clear, he keeps a steady tempo and doesn't change it. Everybody else depends on him. The bass player doesn't have to hear the lead guitar, and the singer doesn't have to hear the keyboard very well, but they all really have to hear the drums... that's why they're in back, so everybody is in front of them and can hear them well.

By virtue of it's size it has to be kept at the back, else many instruments would not be visible.
