They take that big first breath to expand their lungs for the first time ever.

I can't remember my own birth of course, but I would imagine the crying had some thing to do with the sudden removal of the soft, warm, dark, quiet world we'd been used to for the past 40 or so weeks. Babies are probably sore from being pushed out, and it's suddenly bright, loud, and cold.

When babies are in the womb they get their oxygen supply, nutrients, and heart pulse from the umbilical cord from the mother. Not all babies cry right after birth. After making sure baby is independent out of the mother after birth, they cut the umbilical cord, making it that the baby will now have to supply oxygen on their own from their lungs. Most babies cry after birth because they are not use to supplying their own oxygen and that big sound that comes out of them is a huge reassurance to the medical staff and parents that the baby is healthy and breathing on their own. Also, they are in a whole other world and it is strange and scary to them. They got use tho being in the womb, dependent on mom, and now they have to do everything on their own. Some babies don't cry a lot for many reasons. Shock of the new world, the very familiar and comforting sound of mama or papas voice that they've known for 40wks, and many other reasons.

I am assuming that you are asking why babies cry at birth. Well, it just the natural response for a newborn, who has entered a new environment that is not longer temperature controlled and surrounded by liquid. It's pretty cold and strange on the outside. Crying is the way humans are able to relieve emotional tension and to help balance their nervous systems.

When babies are born they do cry. They lets the doctors know the baby is alive. But they check for other stuff on the baby.

When a baby first comes out they have to take a breath of fresh air. What better way then to cry? It opens the lungs and fills the body with oxygen.

I wasn't, and neither were my 3 daughters...so not all babies are.

Some even smile.

Maybe the crying has to do with the whole "pick them up by the feet and whack them on the butt" routine some doctors go in for.

Thinking of the pain of delivery! Sad to leave a safe place, and land in a human avtar! Thinking of the life ahead, which is not a bed of roses! And, giving an indication that the lungs are working, sound box is ok!

Crying is a natural response when we are born that helps clear the fluid out of our lungs, and also trigger our respiratory system, etc.
