when someone tells u god speed what does that mean?

god speed derived from a shipping term,sailors used to say to one an other, good speed, for travelling by ship and ment as get their fast and safe and as travelling by sea was a dangerous, slow and a treacherous task in those days the term became god speed -sort of like wishing someone luck and good fortune for their travels

It means may God be with you, on your journey, as you embark on a new path, may His grace "speed" you along, sort of like that.

Simply stated ,"you are just wishing blessings on somebody beginning a journey". The journey is in the eye of the beholder ... It could be a trip. Surgery. Whatever. Not important.
