I read somewhere that when your female has puppies that the father is not suppose to be around her because she could get pregnant again. Is this true? Also, if this is true, how long does the father need to be away from the female so she does not get pregnant again? When can he be around her again? When can he be around the puppies? Is there anywhere on the internet where you can get information on having puppies for the first time and needing to know exactly what you should do? The female and her 4 puppies are doing great. She is feeding them all and is doing a great job caring for them. I just need to know where I go from here. Thanks for your time and your responses.

My dog just had her pups(7 of them) 43 hours ago. I have 2 other dogs, she wont let them anywhere near her pups. She doesnt mind me being there and touching them, but the other dogs she growls at. So I have her in a seperate bedroom. I read not to be with her alot, I check up and feed her every 2 hours, that gives me a chance to put fresh paper and blankets in to the wading plastic pool I have all of them in. The very bet of luck to you and your new little ones. What kind of dog do you have? Mines an Aussie mix, this was her first(and last) pregnancy.

My dog who is a maltese just recently became a father. I can honestly say there has been no problem with having him around the puppies. The only thing you have to watch is that the pup's dont mistake the male dog for the female as the male can get annoyed with the pups grabbing a certain place, if you know what I mean. Male dogs are also very protective of the mother and pups and I think this is an excellent quality. One point though is that you have to watch your male dog with the female mother as he can sometimes be mistaken that she is on heat. Depending on the dog's temperament, you do have to watch the male dog. There are occasions they have to be separated but it doesnt cause a problem, just watch them together and use your own instincts. Good Luck.

It is not necessary to keep the father away from the puppies or the female. I would watch carefully that he doesn't try to hurt them. The female cannot get pregnant again until she come into "heat". That will be in about four months. I do strongly suggest spaying the female. Do a search on the Internet regarding Litters. There is a lot of good information available

She cannot get pregnant immediately after having a litter. She will not be able to get pregnant again until the puppies are over 4 months old (6 months after her last heat). Female dogs only cycle every 6-9 months and they can only get pregnant during their heat cycle. Females should not be bred every heat cycle, they should be given a least one cycle in between pregnancies to give their body a chance to recuperate.

The male should still not be around the female or her puppies until the puppies are at least 4 weeks old. Any earlier will stress out the mother and the male could potentially harm the puppies.

The male isn't suppose to be around because it stresses the mom out and she needs to be in a low stress environment in order to really care for her new puppies. When my dad was breeding (he stopped) we wouldn't let the male around until after atleast 2-3 wks longer if the mom seemed stressed or if the male was to hyper and might step on the puppies. They will not get pregnant again right away no. I know some breeders that won't let the male around the puppies until they are 6 wks it all depends on how the mother handles having another dog around, most do not want other dogs around their puppies.

I never left my maltese the first 2 weeks with new puppies. It was her first litter and she was lying on them and wrapping them up in the blanket. I had to rescue the puppies a few times so I stayed with her 24/7 just in case she accidentally smothered them x.... the dad was with us the whole time and she let him into the pen after a week just to see the puppies. After 3 weeks she let him in to lay with the puppies. She told him when to leave lol

she cannot get pregnant again until her next heat. As far as the father not being around the mother or pups, this depends on their temperment, some males do not like the pups and will try to hurt them, the mother may not let the male near them. I have bred my dogs and they were fine being together but it all depends on them.

hi, your female dog can not get pregnant again until she comes back into season. he can be around her straight away but i wouldn't let him near the puppies until they are a bit older, male dogs can some times kill pups. the female will generally let you know when she is ready for him to be near them.
we have been breading dogs for a few years now and this is normally how it goes.

I am a dog lover and please note that when dogs give birth, they tend to be dangerous at times, they do not allow anyone to come near them probably thinking that their puppies are in danger.
