This president thinks that the war is winnable. He also proclaimed victory 2 months after it started, but that's old news.

It's almost four years since this war started and there's no end in sight with the upcoming surge in troop levels. Iraqi civilians and American soldiers are killed every day, but for what? At what point can you or the president say the US military is winning or won the war? And, to Americans, in the Military or not, what is the gain?

The US has already won the war in Iraq, by not winning the war.

The status of Iraq was carefully planned and designed. Peace and democracy were never the true intent.

A democratic and peaceful Iraq would not allow the construction of several permanent military bases in their country.

A peaceful Iraq would ask the US military to leave sooner rather than later.

A democratic Iraq would nationalize and directly control its oil interests, and act in Iraq's best interests, which may directly conflict with US corporate interests.

A free Iraq would not be likely to support or allow the repair and reopening of a pipeline from Iraq to Israel, ending Israel's energy crisis.

An independent Iraq would likely join other Arab states in opposition to the US policy regarding the Israeli occupation of Palestine.

The only way to secure US control of the situation, is to ensure a controllable level of unrest and violence. This policy ensures that the US will be calling all of the shots for the foreseeable future.

US Benefits from "stay the course":

The Iraqi government is prevented from gaining enough local acceptance or power to stand up against US decisions.

The people are convinced that external forces are causing the violence.

A violent theater of operations allows for easy expansion of the conflict to surrounding countries.

Contractors make billions providing security and reconstruction efforts, many projects get to be repeated due to attacks on infrastructure.

The US gets a large permanent military structure in the country, allowing the exertion of force easily anywhere in the Middle East.

Republicans get to discount any opposing opinions by invoking patriotism and troop support.

The American public gets daily reminders of how terribly dangerous this world is and gets it's daily prescribed doses of the words "Death" and "Terror", to maintain the unrealistic level of fear required.

The Department of Defense, CIA, and Homeland Security get blank checks to operate and no oversight.

The US military gets an entire country to use as a live fire testing range for all of it's new weapons and systems, with an added bonus of actual human casualties to allow for more precise documentation of the weapons effectiveness.

Our lawmakers get a pass from any real domestic spending or agendas, because we all know we can't afford them due to the war in Iraq.

The President has asserted a position of ultimate power within our government and easily gained control over those pesky Constitutional issues with the passage of the Patriot Act, Homeland Security Act, and the Military Commissions Act.

The President also enjoys a form of diplomatic immunity from impeachment only as long as the war persists. The fault for this lies with our lawmakers, that place the perceived political fallout from an impeachment above their Country, their constituents and their Oath of Office.

While the war in Iraq continues, US citizens are completely distracted from almost every other issue.

End the illegal occupation of Iraq.

BRING ALL OF OUR TROOPS HOME NOW!!!

It's not about what the US will gain or lose. It's what the wealthy and rich entrepreneurs, businessmen, shareholders, politicians, etc. who own or have a share in the profit for oil, technology, weapons of war, and equipment are cashing in on. Whether the US wins or loses this war, only the clever will surely gain.

If a troop surge of 21,500 costs about $70 billion dollars, imagine all of the vendors involved in this network. Which companies will profit from the manufacturing of tanks, weapons, and high tech equipment? Don't forget the companies you have to pay to fill up the gas tank for all these gas-guzzling vehicles.

War is BIG business.

And when it comes to the cost of freedom; money, lost lives, etc. - it's the perfect diversion the average patriot will buy into :-)

Selfish as it may sound...but it has always been money that makes the world go around

How about a world in which terrorists know they can't push around whoever they want just because they don't like them. It's called "freedom", but, as I read your question, you sound clearly too young to fully appreciate the price of freedom, and the value of it. I pray that one day, without paying too high a price, you do. My son has recently come back from his second tour of duty over there as a part of the U.S. Army, and HE clearly knows why we're there, and the fact that it's not only winnable, but we've been winning for quite some time. And some friends of mine's son got back from Afghanistan as a Major in the U.S. Army, and he's very clear we've been winning for quite some time. You must be listening to the television media to ask your question. It's like getting an opinion about the Jews from Adolf Hitler. A little biased I'd say. Find some realistic news sources, like "The Washington Times" (NOT the washington post, another liberal lying rag). God Bless you.

The citizens, who the US govt. is supposed to represent, gain nothing but another war to put in history books. This war obviously is not about spreading democracy. The only people who can gain anything has to be the US govt. because this "it's for your safety" excuse is stupid and ridiculous. That means money is the motivation. And really, there isn't any possible way that you can stop terrorism through the use of terrorism.

The Democrats have been asking themselves this same question since 2002. At this point there is no answer, because this war is unwinnable. If this word -unwinnable-, confuses you, refer to Vietnam. We pulled out of that guerrilla war and now find ourselves right back again. Support our Troops! Vote in 2008.
