he is paper trained already. would the box be better

YES! They have special "Doggie Boxes" made for just that. They are very popular in the city where people have small dogs. I have seen them sold at PETCO and some other major pet stores.

Do not just fill up a box with dirt. This will be messy, but also can have a lot of bacteria build up. (Not to mention bugs and other icky things!)

Well at the animal store they sell big pads for dog and its waterproof it wont go through on the floor read the instructions its good.They will get use to it and if they want to pee or do a poo they go there.They sell them in 12's so its good cause its disposal.The box is not a good idea cause where ever u go with him he will find a box and pee in it.They need to be comfortable too.
