I am trying to lose weight through exercise but wondered if the same effects can be achieved through walking for longer periods of time versus running over a shorter period of time. Distance covered by both methods would be identical. Thanks !

No, that is a myth that many people go spreading around. The effort you put into exercise also has to be taken into consideration. You can't just lolly-gag for 6km and expect to recieve the benefit you would have received if you ran at a 12km/h pace.

In your example I will say you are a 150 pound person for the purpose of calculating calories. if you were to walk 6km in an hour you would burn 296 calories. If you were to run 6 km in half an hour then you would burn 422 calories. You have to take into consideration the effort you put into an exercise. There are many calculators on the internet that would confirm these calculations.

interesting question, i would have to think that running would burn a few more because your heart rate is elevated and also you are exerting More force with your muscles.

Yes. It's about the distance and not the time/effort.

And in fact, walking is less of a trauma to your body than is running.
