The arguments for the existence of God do not seem to require that God be a conscious being.

Naturally, the Judeo-Christian God is assumed to have quite a personality.

But from a purely ontological point of view, is it a logical requirement that God be conscious?

Well, I'm not sure there's any logical proof that God's existence requires God to be anything more than "first cause," which would require no more consciousness from God than is present in an amoeba.

But let's see what the rest of the community thinks. I'll put this to a vote.

In answer to your question, I have had interesting conversations with others who have felt as you do. Some of them said that they just could not reconcile that God is conscious because of all the suffering and wickedness in the world today. To help answer your question the bible talks about Jesus and what he says about God. At John 14:2 it says "In the house of my father there are many abodes." In that scripture Jesus spoke of God as having a figurative house, or dwelling place. Also at John 16:28 it says "I came out from the Father and have come into the world. Further, I am leaving the world and am going my way to the Father." In that scripture it shows that Jesus believed that God is an actual Person living in a specific location. Jesus never referred to God as some abstract force. On the contrary he talked to God and prayed to him. He often called Jehovah his Heavenly Father, a term revealing his deep intimacy with God. Some scriptures that can further bring that out are John 8:19, 38, 54. I really hopes this helps to answer your question. And also here is a link to an article that may further answer your question.

he is conscious and you can experience his consciousness through the Holy Spirit. As you repent and get baptized, u can ask for the gift of the holy spirit. The Holy spirit who is the comforter, teacher would lead u into things about God. This relationship is the most evident of God.

Do you believe in God, and why?

This is an interesting question. First of all, we, as human being, did not come to this world on our own choice, and we will not leave this world on our own choice. All the natural signs, the universe, and starting from ourselves, we can see how beautiful and complex our human body is. Everything in our body, our organs are so complex and yet complete in functionality. Human eye for example, how we see, recognize colors, all such a complex mechanism. How is it possible to have such an organized universal system without a Creator? For us human beings, even for designing a small car, there are so many procedures and requirements before it comes out in the market. How do animals have instincts and know that they have to feed and protect their babies? Do they go to animal school, no? The sun, the moon, stars, they are all signs that there is Someone behind all this.

Are there many gods?
The simple and most logical answer is, No. Can you have two gods without any conflict in decisions, all the time? Here we have matters of life and death, if there were two, or three, or six gods wouldn't they have conflict when a person would die, where he will live, how much he will earn and when an incident would happen and how it will happen?
Why don't we see God? Possibly there is a logic behind it, in God's infinite wisdom. We don't have to see everything to believe it. May be we will see God after we die and then He will judge us on our actions. Someone who has created us and everything around us may have a better reason to not show himself, yet.

How do we find what God has to say? If we believe that we were created for a purpose, and there is good and evil, and we have been given choices for everything we do in this world, may be there is some guideline which God wants us to follow. When you buy a new machine you just don't start using it. You use the manual to read and understand how that machine would operate. So it is possible that we also have a manual for our lives, which tells about what is good for us what is bad, for there are consequences for all choices.

Which book should I follow? We should look for scripture that is most authentic. Should we not believe that there must be scripture(s) written/instructed by God himself? If there is one God then it makes perfect sense that His message should not be conflicting. The one who has sustained universe must be able to sustain and preserve His message. We know that Prophets came to this world from time to time and delivered messages and were also given miracles. They brought commandments like Torah, Zaboor, Bible and Quraan.

What religion should I follow? If you believe in a Creator and believe in life and death and justice then you should follow that one Creator and His message, the message in its original form without conflicts and without different versions.

Will we be held accountable for our acts? The most logical answer is, Yes. Justice won't be served if we are not held accountable, rewarded for our good and punished for our bad deeds.

Which religion to follow? God must have sent all prophets with the same message. It is not possible that if God is One, then different prophets will preach different messages. However from time to time the rules/application may be different. If they have same message, then why there is conflict? It is possible that Humans out of corruption, may have tainted some of these books, that's why we see so many versions of Bible and Torah and Zaboor. The original message has been corrupted. The same original message which these books had is also in the Quraan, but God promised in Quraan that He will preserve it, so for the last 1,450 years there is only single untainted word of God, in which God himself speaks to us, and reminds us that He sent these messengers with the same message but the followers neglected them and changed the message. For the Quran, He promised, He will preserve it till the end of time, and it is a miracle by itself that the book has not seen a single word change. No other book that old has survived.

Why are so many bad things related to Muslims? We should not look at the followers, we should look at the religion, and not base our thoughts on media and preconceived notions. Some followers may be bad, portraying evil, but it simply means that evil is within themselves. Islam teaches Peace, modesty, trust, justice, and it has the same message which prophets like Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad (PBUH) taught. That is, one God worthy of worship, He is all knowing of past, present and future, ever living, without partners, no wife, no sons, unlike anything we have ever seen.

What does Islam says about Moses, Jesus, doesn't Islam preach hatred for these religion?
In Islam teachings, not only Moses and Jesus were messengers of God, they were also given books, and brought the same message of God which was later on preached by Muhammad. The name of Moses is messenger more than any other prophets in the Quraan, he was a beloved Prophet and God gave him miracles. The same message of Only one God worthy of worship, no partners, was brought by Jesus, he was a Prophet of God, not a son, and he was given very high status and miracles. His mother, Mary, was a very pious woman, and according to Islamic teachings she will have the highest status among the women of Paradise. And finally, Muhammad, brought the same message which was preached by Moses and Jesus, to follow one God, and Muhammad is the final prophet. Muhammad was given the Quraan, which is the word of God, and God promised to keep it intact till the end of time.
Quraan in some places have admonished Jews and Christians for changing the message (book) of God, and instructs them to believe in Muhammad, as they were told by God in Jewish and Christians scriptures to follow Muhammad and his teachings when he arrives. Those messages were changed by Jews and Christians in their books, the very reason why we see so many conflicting versions of Jews and Christian scriptures.

It's all written in good faith and hope it does not hurt anyone. Thank you very much!
