You generally have to have some reason to abate penalties (and in some cases, interest), such as heath problems, family problems, etc.

You should contact a tax attorney, as almost all tax attorneys offer a free no-strings initial consultation.

By the way, tax attorneys do not charge any more than most CPAs or enrolled agents! Unfortunately there are a number of unethical "debt resolution" companies out there that will charge exorbinant prices. As a tax attorney myself, I often find that my fees are about half of what these non-tax lawyer firms charge (taxpayers often hire me after their non-lawyer fails). Check out this article on the topic before you hire one of those folks -->

You don't really need a tax attorney unless you are being prosecuted for tax evasion or have a dispute with either the State or Federal govt regarding the interpretation of tax law.

Depending on how much you owe and for how long. You can ask for a waiver of penalty. If you have a decent reason, they will let you off the hook. However, they will not let you off the hook for the interest no matter what.

there are ways to get around paying interest and penalties. The people that can help you best with this are tax attorneys, however they will also charge you the most. Another option is seeing an EA or CPA and ask them if the do "Offer and Compromise" if they know what that is then thats the people you want to talk to.
