Haze is the combination of gases and particles interacting with an atmospheric inversion. The gases and particles come from things like power plants, buses, cars, lawn mowers, etc., which burn fossil fuels like coal, oil and gasoline. The atmospheric inversion comes from when a cooler air mass above the city holds the gases and particles in the warmer air beneath it. Haze gets especially bad when the city is in a valley that also helps hold the air in.
