A formal dress. If you're nervous about being over- or underdressed, go with a classic, conservative, understated formal dress in neutral colors, nothing too flashy or colorful. Keep your accessories, hair and makeup sleek and classic as well.
Make sure your outfit and shoes are comfortable to sit and walk in so you have less to worry about and can focus on enjoying your evening.

If it's the Gala Night (Season Opening), formal attire is the norm; I wouldn't say "required". For other nights, something comfortable and a little dressy and that means a nice dress, not jeans. That's what I have seen at the San Francisco Opera House. LA? I have no idea.

Go cocktail dress (semi-short black do-all Chanel) unless the opera is being held after 8:00 pm. After that, go full length, also to-the-elbow gloves, the most beautiful and uncomfortable shoes you have ever worn, and have a greeeeat time!
ps My parents met singing opera, and was literally weaned on all this protocol
pps Also wear most beautiful/uncomfortable shoes with Chanel dress :0

Overdressed is always the best bet for the opera, ballet, etc. I have been to numerous ballets and operas and never go under dressed, think semi formal to formal and you will be fine. Plus what girl doesn't LOVE a night of dress up????
Have fun!!!

Once upon a time, things like that really mattered. Today, as long as you are neat and clean, anything goes. The bottom line is that no one is there to look at you -- they're going to focus on what's happening on stage. So relax, enjoy the show.

Dress to the nines. Look good, there is no such thing as over dressing to an opera. Enjoy!

Dressy attire is usual, although you'll probably see some people dressed down. Don't go formal; that's usually reserved for opening nights and galas.
