I would say that they have to import all this stuff. That means they have to have something to trade for it. Perhaps gold, or minerals, or oil or something. A really fine example of such a place that has been surviving for years is Los Angeles. Within the basin, not enough water for sure. Not enough food grown for the population. All the good soil paved. But inhabited nevertheless. I live in Northern California. We supply a great deal of their water and much of their food. Not sure why.

I'm being honest, I'm a Mum of 4.

Countries survive because of the financial aid that countries like England, US and Canada give.

Most of these people who are living in this area have been driven there because of tribal wars, which drive them to the most inhospitable land. It is not their choice. Naturally we will gravitate to where there is the most water/grazing/food.

Good luck with your essay .

One answer is to mine their mineral wealth, oil & natural gas, using the funds to develop infrastructure, water desalination plants and agriculture (look at what Israel and some of the oil-rich arab countries are doing, turning deserts into productive farms). Another solution is to provide cheap labor to attract industry. But you need good governance, not corrupt officials who divert & channel funds to their advantage with not a care for the struggling masses!

because often times when things like this happen they will have to leave the area where they are living and go somewhere else. Or they could be put in refregee camps and hope and pray that other countries will bring them aid.
