Does anyone know the reason why there's a warning label on honey (children under a year old shouldn't eat it?) I have 4 children and I "totally" cannot remember why....... Thanks.....

"Honey not only offers little more than empty calories, it also poses a health risk in the first year. It may contain the spores of Clostridium Botulinum, which in this form is harmless to adults but can cause botulism (with constipation, weakened sucking, poor appetite, and lethargy) in babies. This serious though rarely fatal illness can lead to pneumonia and dehydration. Some doctors okay honey at eight months; others recommend waiting until a year's end. Because corn syrup may also contain these spores, it too should not be given to babies. It's safe, however, in infant formulas."

maybe it has something to do with the sugar content. Children under 1 year shouldn't really have much by the way of sugars that are not absorbed from foods such as fruit, vegetables, milk. I have been told that using naturally collected honey from farms may necessarily be safe due to the processes of packaging and purification--not sure about this and would have to do more research as I am a believer in purchasing products as close to the growing source as possible

Yea pasturization..some things are in honey which cannot be handled by young children's digestive systems, and is therefore not usually given to children under a year.

It is full of bacteria and can cause the botulism spores to unleash toxins in their intestines and since babies immune systems are not fully developed and underdeveloped intestinal bacteria they cannot fight it off.

Infant botulism

BTW corn syrup and maple syrup can also carry botulism spores

Also pasteurization does not kill botulism. And most cases of infant botulism are caused by environmental contamination (such as soil) and most cases in the US happen in California.

Because their bodies aren't able to process the honey properly. It could give them botulism.

the childs immune system isnt fully grown yet. there is a chemical or a type of bacteria that can get them sick.

I believe it has something to do with it not being pasturized (all Impurities removed)

it's raw, not pasteurized, and can hold bacteria that might make your child sick.

*edit* someone must be bored and is giving everyone thumbs down? -_-
