I live near Chicago. I've heard about this chain called Great Lengths. I have natural blond hair about 4 inches past my shoulders but I want about 4 more inches. How long does the process take and do they use real hair?

cheap hair extentions look terrible!!! Very tacky. Do your homework .. go for consultations with person doing them
You have options real hair or animal hair. Real is more $$ but worth it.
Depending if you have clip, braded or glue in ones... Go to your hair dresser and chat to her/him

There are three ways that you can have extentions done. One involves braiding a few strands of hair along your scalp and then sewing the extension into the braid. Another uses bits of supplemental hair that is almost glued to a few strands of your hair. The last uses crimper beads and the extension is crimped onto a few strands of your hair. Each of these can last 3-6 months and cost anywhere from $200-$3000 depending on the hair and where you get it done. Jessica Simpson recently released a line of pretty affordable extensions and you can find some cheaper ones online or in accessory stores like Claire's that just clip in for a night out. Here's a couple tips though: if you're going to dye your hair, dye it after the extensions are in. Try to find real human hair if you're going for a more permanent look. This is not the time to go cheap--make sure the person putting in the extensions has experience with your hair type. Ask to see pictures of previous clients.

Good Luck!

Ive had a few different types of "permanent" hair extensions - glue, wax and balls. By "permanent" i mean you cant take them out at the end of every day. They have all been real hair and have ranged from $500-$1500, they can take anywhere between 2-6 hours to put in. If you get the synthetic hair it is really hard to take care of and you can not use any heating equipment such as hair dryers and straighteners. Though, with real hair the glue and wax bonds damage your hair quite a bit and if you already have fairly long hair then i really wouldn't risk it. Also, they only stay in for about 5 months before they start looking ratty and falling out and those types of bonds cannot be reused - so it's a fair bit of money down the drain. If you get the ball bonds, they can be reused and dont damage your hair. The cost of extensions also depends on the amount of extensions you want, you will probably need about 300 for a full head of hair. Don't let hairdressers trick you into getting 50 because your hair will look thin in a months time.
Also, because they damage your hair to such a degree you get stuck in a rut of getting them everytime one lot falls out coz u dont want messy short looking hair and in a few years time thats alot of money down the drain.
They are pretty hard to take care of, in terms of the way you wash and brush them to reduce matting. I haven't experienced any itching or hair falling out, i guess that depends on caring for them aswell.
If you get good extensions though, you can do just about anything with them from curling to colouring etc.

I have used the Great Lengths hair before. The quality is amazing but the price is extremely high. I have used a company called Donna Bella Milan that is much cheaper but the quality is every bit as good as Great Lengths.

It usually takes about 3 - 4 hours. Both great lengths and donna bella milan use 100% real human hair.

Both companies quality of hair is great it just boils down to price.

its usually 500-900. it takes a few hours and yes its real hair. its VERY damaging, and usually itches and hurts depending on how they are put in. i would recommend getting the clip in ones. i live by then i have them on in my profile pic. I love them. Jessica Simpson has a line, but the best you can buy is raquel welches hair u wear. i got mine at a beauty suply store for 50 bucks. i get compliments ALL the time on them, no one knows!

hair extentions are never cheap unless you pick up previously cutted hair, clip it on to a hair clip and use it....
