If you have the money to pay down your debts on your own, I would recommend that, only because credit companies often charge you a percentage of the total debt and just hiring one lowers your credit score at first. Instead, just focus on paying down what you owe and don't be late on any payments. Try to pay more than the minimum due if possible. Then contact the businesses that have submitted negative reports for you and ask them 1) if they will lower your interest rate and 2) if they will please remove the negative mark from your credit report. You'd be surprised how many will do it if you just ask.

Only go the credit company route if you're really swimming in credit card debt and don't know what else to do. If this is your situation, they can at least consolidate all the debt and negotiate to get all the interest rates lowered. Then you'll just make payments to that one company instead of trying to deal with a pile of cards.
