How many people pass it. what happens if you dont pass it? are you no longer a med student?If you pass the test what happens next what degree do you get M.D?

I think you get three tries at each step. Step 1 had to be passed to move on to 3rd year of med school. Step 2 was between 3rd and 4th year and had to be passed to graduate. Step 3 was at the end of intern year of reidency, a year after graduating from medical school. Out of my med school class of 66 people, only one person ended up taking step 1 twice. If you can get through the classes in medical school, you can pass the test -- but that was 10 years ago ... not sure it's the same.

MD is an educational degree of "Doctor of Medicine". It signifies the completion of the course requirements to graduate medical school. You need to pass the boards in order to get a medical license to practice medicine in the United States. So theoretically, you can finish med school get the MD behind your name, but never take step 3 of the USMLE -- and never take care of patients.
