I was taught that cats, because their eyes do not have cones, but only rods, are only capable of seeing black, white and shades of gray. But when I get my cat Corwin felt balls to play with, he seems to prefer red and white ones to black and white. Can cats distinguish hues, or only "dark gray" and "light gray?"

Actually, they can only see black, white, and shades of gray in the morning. But at night, wow! They can see all the colours in the rainbow, including red. Well, that's what I read.

Since cats can see at night, most scientist believe they are in fact color blind. Studies have proved that humans who have night vision can not see color.

Many tests have been done to see whether or not cats can see color. All the tests.. say "NO".

My cat Emma has many fluffy little balls that she likes to play with. The one she plays with the most are red. I have put them all in a line and let her chose one. (She is a kitten.) She always picks the red one.

I thought, maybe, it smells like her. She plays with it all the time, how could it not? So I bought a package of new fuzzy balls and placed them in a line. I placed the red one next to me, not in the line. She went right for the little red one.

Could she see the color?

I've read somewhere that cats can see colours but not red it is gray to them, maybe he just prefers the texture or smell of the different balls

More recent research indicates that cats do in fact have cone cells- so they can see red and green. I would not be surprised to learn they can see other colors as well.

Nah,

I have a red pen light - and my Tabby chases it across the room and up and down the halls, as I point it in different directions.

Sorry - but he sees the red light.

GOD bless us!

Yes, I just tested the theory. Ok I took a red bouncy ball and threw it at my cat. It chased after it really ticked off so it was able to see red, or it wouldn't have found it.
