It is never rude to be nice to an animal.

What a strange question.

I'd say...if it's a service animal or it belongs to someone you don't know, then yes. It's rude. Unless of course there's a handsome fella at the other end of the leash and you're trying to meet him. Then it's okay!!

But you know, pet owners are a strange breed. I know. I'm one. Most of the time, when people bring animals (excepting service animals) out to public places, they WANT other people to dote on their pets. They want everyone else to love that pet the way they do. So most likely, they will not consider it rude to pet the pet. Just make sure you ask permission first.

I wouldn't say that it would be rude to pet them, but I would ask the owner first if it was okay. Some people are strange about things like that. And most animals wouldn't mind unless they are a shy animal. It's always safer to ask the owner first.

Generally, if the pet is on a leash, it is best to ask first. And to refrain if the pet doesn't want to be petted.

But some people love it when you give their animal attention.

I am a cat lover, and yes, I would consider it rude if someone pet my cat (without asking or inquiring first). I don't have a problem with family members or close friends. But, I would have a problem with a stranger petting my cats unless I was asked first.

"Rude", no. Cautious and courteous yes. You never know if the pet is a biter, scratcher, etc. or if the animal has a "tender spot" of some type that the animal dislikes to be touched.

No if you ask first....unless you know the people than just do it.....i wouldn't recommend walking around petting strange animals though... the animal may think its rude (jk but don't pet animals you don't know)

Rude, no, possibly dangerous, yes. The main reason why your expected to ask to pet an animal is for your own protection, you dont know how the animal will react to an stranger, the only expection is working animals and thats because they are WORKING

No...i like it when someone shows love to my kitties..the only thing that I dont like is when someone is trying to grab them and pet them or make them sit on their lap when the cat is trying to get away. T

I wouldn't think so. I guess it all depends on the owner and the animal. I would first ask permission from the owner just to be safe. Some animals may be touchy around people they don't know.
