Staying well hydrated for one. You need to drink more water on a regular basis - not late at night before you sleep (or you will be getting up a lot to go pee).

First, chuck your Chapstick. Conventional lip balms contain petroleum and sometimes alcohol, both of which dry the sensitive skin on your lips. Instead, moisturize and protect your parched, peeling lips with castor oil. Carry a small squeeze bottle of the oil and apply it with your finger often throughout the day. If you plan to be out in the sun, use a natural petroleum- and alcohol-free balm with an SPF of 15 a few minutes after rubbing in the castor oil. You can also try vitamin E oil, Carmex, or aloe vera gel.
Massage dry lips with a generous dollop of petroleum jelly. Allow it to get to work for a couple of minutes to soften your skin. Then, gently rub your lips with a warm, damp facecloth. As the petroleum jelly is removed, the flakes of skin will come with it.
Apply cool, salt-soaked cloths to the lips everyday to hydrate the lips..
Avoid licking your lips.
Take your vitamins.
Chapped lips are also a sign of anemia. If that could be the case, you should that checked out too.

At night before you go to sleep, liberally apply Aquaphor ointment (it's about $5 for the tube and you can find it in the moisturizer aisle or the baby aisle with the diaper creams) on your lips. You may want to put an old t-shirt over your pillow for the night because the ointment is greasy and could stain your pillow case.
After your lips heal so they aren't quite as cracked, use Carmex during the day, the stuff is awesome. your lips should feel better in a few days.

It's in a medium size tube and its lip gloss and you can get it at target or walmart and it is like 5-6 dollers but theres something inside this gloss that soothes the lips . something like none other, I swear. I just can't remember what its called. Just look for expensive lip gloss. It also keeps the sun away from the lips too. I am so serious. When you put it on chapped lips you can feel the burn healing the chapped lips emediatly

Have you tried Carmex? This stuff can work miracles on chapped lips. Put a ton on before you go to sleep. And don't lick your lips if you're going to be outside. That will just make it so much worse!

gunk? like dryed up? i used to have a problem with chapped lips, the best stuff ever is aquaphor you can buy it at your local drugstore. its like a vaseline, but its better. dont ever use ChapStick the brand, chapstick creates a formula that makes your lips addicted to it, and it can irritate your skin, also toothe paste with whitening in it can cause skin gunkish. i just heard all of this from a dermatologist hopefully it helps

drink a lot of water, it cleans them off instead of gunking them up more like coffee and coke do. try blistex I know you said it gunks them up b/c it's chapstick, but it really really works for me. I would never use anything else. good luck
