i am a guy and i may be entering my first serious relationship soon. should i be expected to pay for every date? i've heard that this can sometimes make the girl think she has control of the relationship and tool you around. in what situations should i or should i not pay?

it's not that i can't afford it, i just don't want to seem desperate or give her too much control over the relationship.

The man paying for the date is simply tradition. If you truly care, the money is not an issue. If she starts expecting it or demanding expensive things, it will be an early warning sign of what your efforts mean to her.

If it bothers you, or she tries to pay her own way, allow it and see what happens.

I agree with the advice of the Warlock. The guy paying for dinner is a tradition. I think the guy should pay for the first ten dates and after that the guy and the girl can share the bill. But even then the guy should pick up the bill from time to time, for example on special occasions.

If you're not loaded, I suggest you guys chip in the first coupla dates.

But I think it's good when you pay for a few dates and your girlfriend pays for a few as well, take turns that way it's fair :)
