Do law enforcement agencies contact every employer listed on your submitted background investiagtion?

I am currently going through a background investigation with a law enforcement agency. I had to list every job (including silly part-timers) I've held in the last 7 years. Do they really contact each one even if it's irrelevant to the position you're applying for? Just curious

Yes. Plan on having them contact everyone you listed, plus a lot of people you didn't list. Even if the job isn't relevant, your behavior while working there is relevant, and they'll want to talk to someone about it.

I sure did. I was a chief in a medium sized dept. My assistant chief and I always contacted past employers. What I was interested in was the quality of the work performed, how they got along with fellow workers, honesty, appearance, and how much time they took off.
Quality of work speaks for itself. Getting along with fellow workers means I don't want a malcontent stirring up problems in my department. Honesty; well the last thing any department wants is a liar or thief in their midst. Appearance; you are representing my department, if you did not care how you dressed at your last job why would I think you are going to care now. Time off; you get scheduled days off; those people who call in sick to get an extra day off make their fellow worker do their job. A goof-off has no place in law enforcement.

As an employer I can tell you I have been contacted a few times about people who had worked for me many years previous.
