A coworker made this fabulous looking cake and I'm wondering what the icing was made out of. It was very thick (1/4"), hard (almost like plastic) and tasted somewhat like licorice. It was just a normal white cake, does anyone know what this icing/frosting was?

It could of also been royal icing with a anise flavoring in it.

Royal frosting from Cooks.com

1 lb. confectioners' sugar
3 lg. eggs
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar

In a medium size bowl, combine 1 pound unsifted confectioners' sugar, 3 large egg whites, and 1/2 teaspoon of cream of tartar. Beat until thick and fluffy. Cover with damp cloth while using to prevent from drying out. Enough for 2 layer cake or sheet cake. You may add a teaspoon of your favorite flavoring

Hard like plastic sounds like fondant. She could have flavored it w/ anise to give the licorice flavor.

More than likely it was fondant. It is made to get like that. You sometimes see it in bakeries. They use i more to make those elegant looking Wedding cakes. It just look nicer than regular frosting.

The stuff is called fondant. It is composed of them in large plastic boxes. They roll it out like we may roll out pie dough until eventually it is gigantic sufficient to conceal the cake layer, then they gentle it on. it is sweet.
