The Santana (or Passat here in the states) was introduced in the mid 1970's and the Jetta (Vento or Bora in Europe/South Africa) was introduced in 1980, so both have been around a while.

I have a Jetta and have 210,000 miles on it. The Santana is the bigger model and I would recommend getting it with a VR6. The 1.8t is a good engine, but two people I know who owned them said they seemed a little underpowered. For what you pay for the Passat over the Jetta, I feel the Jetta is a better deal. You have to drive each on to see which one suites you best.

Both have their issues with reliability. I have been lucky and spent very little on repairs. Just plan on little things going wrong that are annoying. One rule we live by is "if it breaks and you can live with it, do so as once you fix it, something else will go wrong".

Buy a Bently manual for the one you purchase if you plan on doing any work yourself. It's worth the investment.

The jetta is newer, it has not been out for that many years, I don't know to much about the jetta. But on the other hand the Volkswagen Santana is a really good dependable and reliable car the upkeep is easy.
