I have 2 Norwich Terriers. They are soooooo cute! My girl is 1 1/2 and my boy is 8 months. I'm planning to breed them soon. At what age is it okay to breed my dogs? How much vet care do I need to get my girl during her pregnancy? This will be my first time breeding dogs and any other advice would be helpful.

Fron the AKC Norwich Club Website. Females should be over 2 years old and males should be over 18 months old.

Both will need a pre-breeding vet check to make sure he/she is parasite free, and has good thyroid function and genetically sound knees and eyes. .She will need to be current on vaccines. She will need vitamins from your vet. You will need to schedule 2 weeks home during the time she is expecting.

Ask your vet how much an emergency C-section will cost, so you will know how much to have put aside..just in case.

Each litter costs me around $1100 to raise..so be sure to have enough on hand for vet checks, and puppy care.

I do not know your type of breed well. I breed yorkshire terriers. much harder. Your girl needs to be 2 years old before she should become pregnant which doesn't seem to far away. boy needs to be 1. After the dogs tie you right that date on the calander. you let them tie every other day for 6 days. then seperate them. until the heat is over. Take your female to the vet 6 weeks after the first tie for a prenatal exam. they may want to do exrays to see how many pups. This is when you get your welping box ready. And wait. be sure not to leave her alone on her due date.. about 63 days from first tie. your vet will tell you of things to watch for.

first just cause they are cute don't mean ****. just putting two dogs together isn't how you responsibly breed. Second research research and research some research somemore. Know the breed, know the dangers. Know what to expect and what emergencies may arrise. Breeding isn't cheap.

Different breed than your dogs but here is a run down of what I have done all fees I state are from a small country vet, this is from our curent litter of 13, and they are still with us... ultrasound $60, Labor & delivery $150, vet on stand-by, formula $20 a can times 8 cans, day old vet visit $300, 5 wk check-up for one pup $45. 6 wk vet check litter $250, 2 sets of shots each $180, puppy food, $25 for 4 days times how many bags for 5 weeks now and counting, advertising $100, wash/dry laundry 3 loads a day, time off work, sleepless nights, cleaners $50, linolium flooring $600, misc meds $30, Intestinal bug meds $60 registration papers $120.

And we can barely get $500 per puppy where we live, even though the breeding lines used are worth at least $750-1000 for limited registration. In the end is it worht the cost if you still come out with puppies to sell?

This is really a cute breed, When breeding your female this is a good age. The cost that may vary...after you know they have mated the first thing to do is from that date count 63 days and be prepared for a litter of pups...also as long as there is no problems just a office visit exam. Just start you female on puppy chow. Things to watch for in 4/5 weeks her **** will look bigger and swollen them you can take to the vet if all things are normal.

Ask your vets opnion and get both screened for common genetic problems of the breed. YOU WILL NOT MAKE MONEY unless you wan tto be a puppy mill. Your female should be at least two years old. You should have at least 2000 dollars saved up for possible health complications also you should find homes for them now to make sure they will be there. Also draw up a return only contract in case the new owner wants to get rid of them they won't go to a shelter also a spay/neuter contract so you don't contribute to over population. Make sure your breeding will strengthen the breed not hurt it.

Why are you breeding animals in the first place. There are millions of dogs put to sleep every year, b/c nobody will adopt them. And here you are making more puppies. You're either part of the solution or part of the problem! I had to watch 2 perfectly healthy dogs be euthanized b/c the animal shelters were too packed full. I cried the entire time. DON'T BREED! SPAY & NEUTER!

you need to let your male get a bit older. are all they're health certificates done? if you have your heart set on breeding, which is never a good idea for a novice, please research the breed. bad breeding is the most common cause of birth defects and health issues in puppies. take it slow and if you are breeding for money, you will be very disappointed, if you take proper care of all animals involved, you'll be lucky to break even. love of the breed and producing the healthiest pups is the reason for breeding

If you wish to breed purebred pups you must follow proper standards. Both dogs must be over two years and must pass breeding health checks, once you get through those barriers, you can breed them. You should vet check her before breeding, then when the pups are born. You'll also be expected to give proper vaccinations to all the puppies. I suggested you save up extra money now, as it'll still be a while before they're both old enough.
