I work at a Mercedes repair shop and the only way I would advise you to buy this one is if you have the money to invest in several repairs. Not just one time but several times, especially if it is a couple years old or older. People not only spend thousands of dollars at a time in there, but also come back the next week with a new problem. On the up side, they definitely are safe. If you wreck one, you'll most likely walk out without a scratch. Then take a look at your mangled car and go buy another one.
As for Lexus, this would be my choice. They are one of the highest rated cars by consumer reports. Mechanical repairs will only be the routine ones. They last forever without all the costly unnecessary maintenance. As for myself, I drive the lower model Toyota and couldn't be happier. Drives like a charm and I just reached 100k. My next car will definitely be the luxury Lexus though.

I don't know if either is "better", that all depends on what you're looking for. Lexuses are more reliable by far, but often have boring styling.
Your best bet is to drive all the cars that meet your demands. Don't just limit it to Mercedes and Lexus either, there are a ton of great luxury vehicles out there from BMW, Cadillac, Infiniti, and others. You may find that a vehicle you weren't initially considering surprises you and becomes the one you want.

Both are too expensive. Buy a Chevrolet or a Toyota.
