Leave the oil in the skillet on high heat for about 3 1/2 minutes and it should be reaching that temperature. Oil heat rises on high 100 degrees in a minute.. Good Luck

I absolutely agree with felixnstacy on this one. Use a wooden spoon or wooden chopstick. Insert it into the hot oil and if you see bubbles rise, the oil is the right temperature for frying. But if your oil is smoking its just way too hot.
But whatever you do, pls do not take the other suggestions of putting a drop of water into oil. Once the oil heats up water will definetely splutter and you might hurt yourself.

yeah...if you're deep frying, you should use a thermometer. The last thing you want when deep frying is to have oil that is not hot enough. that is how fried food gets full of oil. when the oil is hot enough, fried food doesn't absorb as much oil. If you are sauteing something or stir fry or something, just get it nice and hot...not so hot that it starts to smoke, though...drop a drop of water into the pan to see if it's hot enough.

That will be pretty hot. If you are trying to sear something, drop a droplet of water on the bare hot metal and see if it spitters and dances around. If so, it's nice and hot.
If you are trying to fry at 350ºF, better wait and buy a thermometer.

Buy yourself an electric skillet. If you don't have one you will love it. It will have temperature settings on it. Nice to use when cooking.
